Moving is incredibly stressful, especially when you’re moving to a new home. We want to help, so below are a few steps to getting ready to move before and when you call us!

1. Figure out what you don’t actually need.

Everybody wants to hold on to all of the little things we accumulate over time in our apartment/house – it’s just natural! What if we need it later? Well, the fact of the matter is, a lot of this stuff you won’t be using before your next move. Before your big move would be the best time to leave it behind!

So let’s get an idea of what we need and don’t need. The first thing to do in this case is to look at the space you’re going to have in the new place you’re moving to. Get an idea of the dimensions of the rooms and your furniture you’ll be moving in. Make sure everything’s going to fit right. If it won’t, don’t fret! You can downsize your furniture pretty easily, especially when you’re planning in advance.

2. Get rid of everything you don’t need.

Once you’ve figured out what you need – or more importantly, don’t need – get to Craigslist or Facebook and start making listings! Don’t list too early, though, or you might find yourself living without a sofa for a while. You’d be surprised how quick people are to buy! People are very wary of buying their bedding from someone they don’t know. Bedbugs and sanitary concerns and all that. So don’t worry if you don’t get any bids on your mattress for a while and consider selling low for it.

This may seem silly to mention but you’d be surprised how many people don’t think of it – try not to go grocery shopping too much before your move. Eat and use as much of what you have to minimize the amount of food you’re moving, because food can get really nasty in a move – and the food that won’t is usually in heavy cans!

3. Call us for a quote!

Around now is the time you should call us to schedule a time for your move and get a quote from us.

We’ve provided a few ways to contact us for a quote on the site, such as the sidebar to the right of this text! If you’d prefer to talk to us directly over phone, you can call us at (585) 475-9390!

4. Prepare your boxes for packing and moving

If you want to pack yourself, here are a few tips! But if you’re not into that idea, you can call us to get a quote on the whole package – packing and moving, storage, etc.!

Boxes – you’re going to need lots and lots of boxes. Here’s a fun little tip – the best boxes to get are totally free! Go to your local liquor store and ask if you can take some of their boxes. They’ll be glad to point you in the right direction. Liquor boxes are incredibly sturdy and are built to pack light enough for you to carry. So you don’t have to worry about packing it too heavy. Or about the box ripping apart in the middle of carrying it, straining yourself to carry a heavy box, etc.

Label your boxes and label them well. Write or label your boxes on the top and sides very clearly. That way you know what’s what even when they’re stacked.

5. Packing and moving

Pack essentials in a single box. Chances are you’re not going to want to unpack just to find your toothbrush when you need it. It’s a really good idea to take everything you’re going to need the rest of the day after you finish moving. This is so you don’t find yourself in that frantic, “Now where did I put the shampoo?!” mindset after a stressful move.

Don’t pack anything really important into a box. If you have paperwork that’s necessary for your new home or your old home, just hold onto that in a folder. The last thing you want is to find yourself in a situation where you need it now but you can’t find it.

Sound like a lot to do and plan? We completely understand, and that’s why we’re here! If you call us for a quote and opt-in to our packing and moving services, we’ll handle all the messy packing work for you so you can relax while our expert team moves for you.

6. Set up services and utilities in your new home ahead of the move

This is really important! You don’t want to be caught without heat or electricity the night of your move, and you want even less to have to make all of those calls after you’ve had a long day!

Don’t forget anything! Utilities and services that are really important include water, gas, electric, your telephone (if you have a landline), television, internet, security and sometimes garbage removal.

7. After the move, learn the area and change your address

This is pretty self-explanatory and obvious, but immediately after the move you want to know where the essential places to go to are.

This includes places like the nearest hospital, general municipal buildings like fire stations and police stations. You’ll also want to locate the post office nearest to you, any animal hospitals, and public transit.

Once you’re moved in, don’t forget to change your address on all essential things such as insurances, banks, your license and car registration. You can also change your address on the US Postal Service website. Afterward, request mail forwarding for a small fee for around a year. That way you can get everything settled on your time.
