Family packing boxes for a moveWhen preparing to move, the number one thing you should be ready for is the packing process. Packing can quickly get out of hand and become overwhelming, and the last thing you want is to be caught in a situation where you’re packing as you move. With that in mind, here are a few tips to help you in the packing process, if you choose to pack on your own instead of take advantage of our packing and moving packages.

Make a list of supplies you’ll need.

This is probably the most important part of the packing process. You don’t want to get caught without any of the necessary supplies in the middle of a lengthy packing session. Building a list of things you’ll need like boxes, tape, bubble wrap and markers will help tremendously to keep you organized.

Find some boxes.

Boxes are probably the most important part of the packing process. You can buy boxes, find used boxes from friends or grocery stores, or use our favorite little trick: Liquor Stores! Liquor Stores are looking to get rid of their boxes all of the time, and you can easily find boxes specifically built to haul heavy objects in lift-able amounts.

Build an essentials box.

Take everything you’re going to need in your first day/night after the move and pack it in the same box. That means things like a change of clothes, toiletries, bedsheets and the like. You may need more than one essentials box, but an essentials box is – well – essential.

Be as critical of your stuff as possible when downsizing before a move.

Don’t let sentiment take over when deciding what needs to come with you on the move – the more you think you need, the more you need to put the effort into packing and moving. That said, take everything you have and separate it into groups:

  1. Definitely Keep
  2. Maybe Keep
  3. Definitely Get Rid Of

And you’ll find exactly what you need after the move and what you can easily get rid of. Take this tip to heart; you definitely don’t want to get into a situation where you’re lugging along a bunch of stuff you don’t need from house to house just because you might need it sometime.

Sort everything into categories.

Organize everything into specific categories so that when you pack them you can easily label. The more organized you are in this part of the packing and moving process, the less work you’ll do in the long run when you’re unpacking.
